Gas is an effect that can appear in the arena. It deals continuous damage to all contestants who breathe in the gas. Gas clouds can be countered by nearby fire, which will instantly remove it.

Sources

  • The Gas Grenade explodes into a gas cloud after its windup time.
  • The Gas Mine creates a gas cloud when detonated.
  • A gas barrel releases gas in two stages:
    • When initially opened, it will continuously leak smaller gas clouds (2m radius, 0.25s duration) from its opening. This gas will also damage any contestant attempting to carry the barrel.
    • Once the barrel implodes, it creates a regular gas cloud.

Mechanics

Any contestant (regardless of which team triggered the gas) that is partially or fully immersed within the spherical radius of a gas cloud for 0.5s will rapidly start taking damage. This damage stops the moment the contestant exits the gas cloud.

Damage from the gas cloud ramps up over time, from 30hp/s to 60 hp/s over 2s.

A contestant can only take damage from one gas cloud at a time, even if multiple clouds are overlapping.

Additionally, a gas cloud acts like a weaker smoke cloud in that the gas cloud is only partially translucent, making it harder to look past the cloud. Any contestant inside the gas cloud will have a visual filter applied that greatly reduces their vision depending on how deep within the gas cloud they are.

Unlike fire, a gas cloud will not expand, shrink, move with objects or react to gravity during its lifespan. This means that if a gas cloud is triggered on a moving structure, the gas cloud will not move with the structure.

Removal

Like Goo, gas is highly flammable and will ignite if it is within 2m of an active fire, including a firing Flamethrower. This causes the entire gas cloud to instantly combust, effectively removing the gas cloud from the arena. The combustion does not deal any damage.

Strategy

  • Gas is a popular tool for defending a cashout station, at which it does a significantly better job than fire since its large area of effect ensures that stealing is not possible from any angle without taking damage. Each source of gas can be used in a variety of ways to defend an active cashout.
    • This adds a big benefit to having a source of fire on the team such as a Pyro Grenade, as it enables the removal of gas and prevents the placement of new gas when trying to execute a steal.
  • Defending a cashout on a moving platform with gas is ineffective as the gas will remain stationary while the station moves out of the gas cloud almost immediately.
    • However, gas can still be weaponized on a moving platform train by triggering it at the front, causing everyone on the train to travel through the gas cloud over time.
