The Riot Shield is a Medium class melee weapon with the unique ability to block and negate incoming opponent fire, designed to defend and push and to engage close opponents using its baton.

Usage

The Riot Shield can be selected as the weapon of any Medium build loadout.

The attack trigger can be used to slash opponents in front of the user to damage them. The trigger must be released before attacking again.

The secondary trigger can be held down to enter a defensive stance, which can be held for any duration but stops the user from sprinting. During this stance, any incoming bullets or other small projectiles and epxlosion damage will have their damage to the user nullified if the user is facing in their general direction. Melee damage is not blocked.

Guide

Strengths

  • The Riot Shield can force a push into an opposing team in a situation where the user would normally get taken down immediately. The user can also guard their teammates using the Riot Shield.

Weaknesses

  • There are places where a blocking Riot Shield user can still be hit from the front: their feet, and potentially their arms.
  • The Riot Shield is usually weaker in teams without good communication, as it is best used in conjunction with an engage from teammates.
  • The Riot Shield' defensive stance is easily countered if the user is attacked by multiple opponents that are not attacking from the same direction.
    • If a Riot Shield user is blocking and walking up to an opponent in one direction, another opponent can assist by going around the Riot Shield user and attacking them from behind.

Tactics

  • The Riot Shield's blocking mechanic is active even while the shield is not raised. In this state, ranged attacks coming from the left of the user will still be blocked if they hit the shield.
  • Similarly to the Dual Blades, a Riot Shield user can walk up to their target while blocking, then attack when they are close enough and the opponent is reloading or trying to escape, or when the baton would outdamage them.
  • The Riot Shield is able to fully absorb the damage from explosions when positioned correctly.

Block

  • Unlike the Dual Blades, which block damage based on the direction of the incoming attack, the Riot Shield uses a solid surface positioned at the Riot Shield's model that blocks ranged attacks specifically. It can also block explosion damage, if positioned as a surface between the user and the explosion source.
  • The shield does not fully reach the ground, and the user will still take damage from ranged attacks striking their feet. Their arms may also be exposed to the side of the solid surface.
  • Flamethrower projectiles are blocked, but they will still set the user on fire to deal damage over time.

Item Mastery

Item mastery XP can be earned by damaging and eliminating opponents with the Riot Shield.

Each time a certain XP threshold is reached, the item levels up. This does not improve the item, but rewards a unique item customization.
